| About the FRIENDS OF YOUNGHUSBAND RIVER CARE INC.
The Friends of Younghusband River Care Inc., have been active for 8 years. We were formed in order to undertake the Revegetation, protection and maintenance of the Riverfront Reserve and Frog Pond at Younghusband, which is under the care and control of the Mid Murray Council.
We have 44 members and 16 of them actively participate in work on the Riverfront and during 2010 our members put in 246 hours, which included mowing, hedging, brush cutting, weeding (including the removal of noxious weeds) and planting new native vegetation. We undertake this work, not only for our own benefit, but that of the local community and the general public.
Our mission is to improve community relationships and give volunteers some sort of ownership of the work we do and ensure OHS&W issues are adhered to.
As our volunteers are more mature people, and working for the community assists with their health and wellbeing.
Our members are looking at propagating native plants for the revegetation of the Riverfront Reserve and Frog Pond. This will make it easier and more cost effective for volunteers who have the desire and ability to undertake plant management for the continual revegetation of the Riverfront.
We also undertake Water quality monitoring and Frog Monitoring for the SA Murray Darling Basin NRM Group.
Ultimately we will be able to have a more “hands on deck” approach to clean up and ensure the ongoing showcase of this area for community and public use.
